MS Teams Win Five Championships!

Middle School Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Golf, Baseball and Boys Tennis all won North Atlanta Metro League Championships!

“It’s quite an accomplishment to have five teams win championships in any given year, but to have five teams win championships in one week is amazing. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything like it in all my years in athletics. I think it shows the quality of our student-athletes across the board,” said Athletics Director Doug Dixon. Muy Bien!

Congratulations to the student students who attained national recognition on the 2012 National Spanish Examinations: Jessica Diaz placed second in Georgia among 6700 students. In all: one gold - Jessica Diaz, two silver - Sasha Popov and Natasha Roy, four bronze medals - Laura Price, Ashley Aycox, Sarah Dixon, and Elizabeth Dworkin, and 18 honorable mentions.  “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012.”  Pisgah has a long history of high achievement on these exams. Students are taught by Spanish teachers, Raquel Diaz, Katie Evans and Cera Marsh.

Williams recognized as Emerging Leader

Congratulations to junior Macy Williams who was named an Emerging Leader for 2012 by the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. The program recognizes juniors in North Fulton County who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and offers a unique opportunity for them to interact with local leaders, and identify and address community issues.

Pictured with Macy are Bradely Riffel of the Chamber, Rep. Lynne Riley of the General Assembly, and Kathy Swahn of the Drake House.

FBLA News

Through a spiritwear fundraiser, Pisgah's Future Business Leaders of America raised $2,070.00 for LOVE 146, a non-profit organization that works toward the prevention of child trafficking and exploitation, as well as recovery programs to help victims of this crime. In other news, through the generosity of an anonymous donor, FBLA offered two $1000 scholarships. FBLA members were challenged to creatively spend $100 in a business fashion that would benefit the community. Congratulations to Cissy Jamieson and Katie Strawinskii who each received $1000 toward their college education!

Hands-On Learning

In Middle School Spanish, each student builds a building/place and the class puts it together as a city. The streets are named after the students. The class learns how to give and take directions in a Spanish-speaking country walking inside their miniature city. They also learn how to bargain in Spanish.

How the Garden Grows!

An extension of the popular Pisgah American History Museum, a learning garden lab has sprouted at the Lower School! Heavenly Landscapes built the box garden and dumped the dirt and since the an automatic sprinkler system has been added. Next the children planted their own tomatoes in biodegradable pots. The classes have to maintain their plants each they come out by picking up twigs, rocks, and sticks. The kids love working in the dirt!

As an example of how lessons come to life in the garden - students have been taught how the pilgrims moved into a new land and had to be self sufficient., growing their own food. There are more big plans for the garden - stay tuned! Pictured are first graders in Ms. Raftery's class and kindergarten students in Ms. Winfield's class.
