Pisgah Girl's Tennis Wins Second Consecutive State Title
The Mount Pisgah girl’s tennis team captured their second consecutive GHSA Class A championship on Friday. The Patriots, who were ranked No. 1 in Class A for the entire season, defeated Wesleyan 4-0 in the championship match. Pisgah (21-1) easily defeated Savannah Christian 5-0 in the semifinal earlier on Friday.
Against Wesleyan Taylor Carlson (No. 2 singles) and Samantha Russell (No. 3 singles) won singles points for Pisgah. The doubles teams of Cissy Jamieson and Nicole Peters (No. 1 doubles) and the sister team of Blanca and Ines Tarrago (No. 2 doubles) also earned points to seal the win. No. 1 singles player Aryn Greene was leading her match when the Lady Patriots clinched the title.
“When we finally won it all our girls were really happy but I didn't see the ‘going wild’ behavior I saw last year. I believe that's because they were confident all along that they would be there. It was more like the pride you see when you accomplish your goals,” said Head Coach Ken Bomar.
The team may have really won the state championship in the quarterfinals when Pisgah defeated Mt. Paran 3-2. Mt. Paran is the only team to have defeated the Lady Patriots over the past two seasons. Playing without Greene, Pisgah lost to the Eagles 3-2 on March 13th.
“Our girls were pretty disappointed [after the loss to Mt. Paran] but I can see now that it was a good thing in the long run. It was a wake-up call for our girls to see that it was possible for them to lose. They started pointing toward a rematch with Mount Paran. After we won the Region they immediately looked at the state bracket and saw that they could meet Mount Paran again in the quarterfinals. When we played them the second time we won 3-2 and I believe that was probably the toughest match of the season for us,” said Bomar.
The Patriots opened the playoffs with a 4-0 win over Walker and then posted a 3-0 win over Prince Avenue Christian in the second round.
After going undefeated in 2011, Pisgah beefed up its non-Region schedule to take on the likes of AAAAA schools Milton, Alpharetta and Centennial; AAAA school Dunwoody; and AA teams No. 8 Lovett and No. 1 Blessed Trinity. Blessed Trinity won the AA state title and Lovett and Milton each reached the state quarterfinals.

Patriots Capture Region 5-A Title
It took two overtimes, but the Mount Pisgah boy's basketball team finally captured the Region 5-A championship with a 64-54 win over Providence on Saturday night. The Patriots had already locked up their first appearance in the GHSA playoffs earlier in the week, but now will hold a No. 1 seed and host a home game on Saturday, February 25.
Freshman Aaron Winchester led the way for the Pisgah scoring 15 points against Providence. Sophomore John Towne scored 13 points, while senior Kyle Sloter added 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Rondy Brownlee finished with nine points.
The Patriots led early taking a 23-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. Pisgah looked in control in the second half, leading by nine at the end of the third quarter (41-32) and 11 with just over six minutes to play in the game. A furious Providence rally tied the score at 48.
The Stars had a chance to win the game, but with the score tied Kareem Adekunle missed two free throws with 1.9 seconds left in the game.
In the first overtime Providence scored first to take a 50-48 lead. They missed two more free throws that would have likely iced the game, but instead Winchester hit a15 footer at the buzzer to tie the game at 50 and send it into a second overtime.
Winchester fouled out seconds into the second OT, but head coach Marvin Latham wisely inserted Brownlee who took over. After being fouled on a drive to the basket Brownlee fit one of two free throw attempts. Providence tied the score again on a free throw of their own. Brownlee then hit a jumper to give the Patriots a 53-51 lead. After two Quarte Sapp free throws, Brownlee scored on a drive to the basket and later added another free throw to put Pisgah up 58-53.
Senior Joseph Marco would add four free throws and Towne another two free throws to seal the 64-54 win.
Pisgah (19-9) finished fourth in their sub-region, which meant having to win four games last week to win the Region championship. The Patriots cruised by Pinecrest 75-43 on Monday, and then traveled to Holy Innocents on Wednesday, where they upset the Bears 59-55 in overtime. Friday night the Patriots again traveled into hostile territory, beating host Wesleyan 52-51.
The 19 wins posted by the Patriots this season is the most for the program since entering the GHSA. Pisgah finished 23-3 and won the GISA state championship in 2006.
Pisgah will host either Trion (14-13) or W. D. Mohammed (17-8) in the opening round of the state playoffs. Trion (No. 4 from Region 6) and W.D. Mohammed (No. 4 from Region 9), will meet on Tuesday in a play-in game.

Kyle Sloter was named the tournament MVP after averaging 21.3 points and eight rebounds per game. The senior scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against Freedom Christian. Fellow seniors Brian Ginty (eight points, 4.3 rebounds and three assists per game) and Joseph Marco (9.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game) were also named to the All-Tournament team.
“I was really pleased with our play over the Christmas break. It was good to see different style of play every game. But more important I think this team came to understand what it takes night in and night out to be a good team. Players are coming to understand their role on this team I was really impressed by the play of our senior players leading this team when things got a little tough during the game. I was happy with our young players coming off the bench giving us energy and getting after the other team,” said Head Coach Marvin Latham.
Heading into sub-region play Latham, in his first season at Pisgah, has his squad off to the best start in the schools GHSA history. Pisgah’s only loss this year came at No. 3 North Cobb Christian. The Patriots have defeated AAAA Lambert and AAA Riverwood.
“We will have to be on our game every game. No longer can we sneak up on people, so we have gone from being the hunter to being the hunted which is fine. But it is important that we continue to do the things that have gotten us in this team position. It will be interesting to see how this team handles success. We as coaches must continue to preach taken one game at a time and stay within the system.”
Pisgah will host Galloway on Tuesday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. After traveling to Holy Innocents and Westminster, the Patriots will return home to open sub-region play against St. Francis on Tuesday, January 10, at 7 p.m.
All home games are played in the Drummond Center on Pisgah’s East Campus, which is located at 9875 Nesbit Ferry Road in Johns Creek.

Reilly Ends Stellar Career with Strong Performance
Already the most decorated distance runner in school history, Sam Reilly finished his prep cross country career with his best performance, finishing third overall at Saturday’s GHSA Class A meet in Carrollton. The senior set a new personal record time of 16:22, which was one of 27 National Elite performances (Reilly was 21st) from all classifications on the day.
“Sam ran a well-executed race on Saturday. We had been waiting for this type of performance from him – we knew he had it in him - and he did it at just the right time,” said head cross country coach Susan Reilly.
The Milton native earned All-State status, finishing behind nationally ranked 800 meter runner Cameron Thornton from Whitefield Academy and First Presbyterian Day’s veteran Gray Lindley.
“I was really excited about my finish,” said Reilly. “For the last half of the season I had been cramping for the last mile. Plus I was making things more difficult on myself by making it such a tactical race instead of going out and just running. My strategy was to go out with the leaders and hold on for dear life."
Reilly holds school records in the 5K, 3200 meters, 1600 meters, 800 meters and as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team. He was also one of ten finalists in the state for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which is a program that honors top High School scholars, athletes and citizens.
“For me the final race, especially with the disappointment of the second half of the season, was awesome. It’s a great motivator for winter training and track season,” Reilly said.
In addition to Reilly the entire Patriots team put forth strong performances to place Pisgah seventh – the best finish ever at the state meet.
"Our guys ran a great race at the State Meet. We finished in front of several teams that had been ranked ahead of us all season, and missed a 6th place finish by only 1 point. It takes a long time to build a program, and this year was the first time in our 8 year history that we’ve had a core group of guys who had been committed to distance running for the past 2 to 4 years, rather than joining the team to stay in shape for another sport. That has made a big difference in our success,” said coach Reilly. “This is a turning point for the boys cross country team. Our seniors will graduate, but we have an experienced group of underclassmen with talented leadership and ability to keep the success going.”
The team totaled 233 points, one point behind Darlington (232 points) and eleven points behind Athens Christian (222 points). There were 36 teams and 238 runners competing in the race.
In addition to Reilly, scoring for Pisgah were Shane Sullivan (32nd place; 17:42), Grant Hicks (45th; 18:15), Chris Spriggs (72nd; 18:51) and Bo Stuart (90th place; 19:14).

Pisgah Softball Ends Season in Final Four
The Mount Pisgah softball team saw their season end on Friday with a 2-0 loss to George Walton Academy in the GHSA playoffs. The Lady Patriots (25-6) advanced to the final four teams before being eliminated.
“The trip to Columbus was a surreal experience. It was an honor to be one of the last four teams standing. I felt like we played well for three out of the four games we played, especially with this being the first time any of these girls had made it this far,” said head coach Haley Brooks.
Pisgah opened the tournament with a 12-0 win over Brookstone, but were quickly sent to the losers’ bracket of the double elimination tournament after a 14-0 loss to Gordon Lee. The Patriots rebounded, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to knock out Calvary Day 10-8.
“We had a break down in the Gordon Lee game that hurt us. I was very proud of the girls when they came back and battled for two games after that to make it to the final four,” said Brooks
But on a rainy Friday night the Pisgah offense, which had rallied time and time again during the season, stalled and could not push across any runs. George Walton scored both runs in the 6th inning – one on a passed ball and the other on a close play at the plate.
“We were battling a couple of injuries, which made out defense a little shakier than usual. Nicole [Peters] was playing with a broken pinky on her throwing hand and Morgan Walters was playing with a shoulder problem that had been nagging her for some time. My girls showed a lot of heart and fight,” Brooks said.
Earlier on Friday against Calvary Day, with the score tied 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning Morgan Walters led off with a single and advanced to second on a bunt by Courtney Condon. A bloop hit by Camille Tracy scored Walters to give Pisgah the lead. Avery White later tripled to score Tracy and give Pisgah an insurance run.
Calvary Day put their first two runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Condon held the Cavaliers in check, striking out the last batter to end the game.
In the opening game against Brookstone, Pisgah cruised to a 12-0 win. The Lady Patriots got on the board early with Walters driving in a run with a first-inning double and Condon adding a sacrifice fly. In the second inning Jenn Sapp drove in two runs with a hit, Madison Claytor doubled to drive in another run and Walters caped off the inning with a home run to put Pisgah up 7-0.
The Patriots added five more runs in the third inning on RBI hits by Sapp, Walters and Condon.
“This season has been a huge success. I feel like everyone has improved and we have really grown as a team and in our faith. I feel that this season has given us the experience to climb a little higher next year,” Brooks commented. “I told the girls, ‘We went from Sweet Sixteen last year, to Final Four this year…we only have a little bit farther to go for next year!’”

Pisgah Boys Place Third in Region Meet
Competing in the toughest Region in Class A, the Mount Pisgah Christian School cross country teams had their work cut out for them to finish in the top four and qualify for the state meet. The boys put together a strong team performance to finish third overall in the Region 5A meet, beating out Providence, Pace and Holy Innocents.
“The boys team turned in the performance of the season. It was a true team effort with incredible contributions from all top seven runners,” said head coach Susan Reilly. “The course was slow, but the boys’ placement couldn’t have been more perfect. There is a saying in cross country that you are only as good as your fifth runner, and Bo Stuart did more than was expected of him, finishing in front of the number five runners for Providence, Holy Innocents’ and Pace, pushing their scores up and keeping us in position for a state berth.”
Sam Reilly (16:49) led the way finishing second overall behind Wesleyan’s Bradley Gossett. Rounding out the top five were Shane Sullivan (15th place, 17:53), Grant Hicks (21st place, 18:33), Chris Spriggs (29th place, 19:02) and Bo Stuart (35th place, 19:23).
Wesleyan won the event with Galloway finishing second.
The Pisgah girl’s finished seventh out of 11 teams. The top seven teams in the Region had been ranked in the top ten at some point this season. Katie Strawinski finished ninth overall with a time of 21:35 to lead the Lady Patriots.
Freshmen Mattie Millikan (21st place, 22:25) and Alex Brady (47th place, 25:55) both set personal records. Alexa Hudgins (37th place, 23:56), Katherine Wilkison (41st place, 24:12) and Marie Keeter (52nd place, 27:16) were the other scorers for Pisgah
The girls’ team is made up of 2 freshmen, 3 sophomores and 2 juniors and should be a force to reckon with in 2012.
The boys’ team will compete in the GHSA Class A State Championship meet in Carrollton on Saturday, November 5, at 10:00 a.m.

Pisgah Softball Defeats Georgia Military to Advance to Elite Eight
The Mount Pisgah Christian School softball team is used to come back wins, but the Lady Patriots (23-4) had to pull out a different kind of comeback to defeat Georgia Military and advance to the Elite Eight of the GHSA playoffs. After dropping the first game of the three game series 6-4, Pisgah had to pull off two wins in a row against a gritty Georgia Military team.
“It was definitely nerve-racking after losing the first game. It’s been a while since we lost, so I was nervous about how the girls were going to respond,” said head coach Haley Brooks.
But as they have done all year long, the No. 3 ranked Lady Patriots responded again to adversity winning the second game 10-8. In the third game, Pisgah led 7-5 heading into the seventh inning. Playing as the visiting team, the Patriots were looking for a few insurance runs in the top of the inning, but instead exploded for 12 runs to win 19-5.
“It feels amazing to be heading to Columbus. I feel like we have been working for this for two years – it is really exciting,” said Brooks.
The series finale was a close game until the seventh inning. Both team scored one run in the first and Pisgah took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second, with Jenn Sapp plating two runs with a two out hit. Georgia Military answered right back, scoring two runs to cut the Patriot lead to 4-3.
In the third inning Morgan Walters doubled and scored on two passed balls, but the Lady Dogs scored two runs to tie the score at 5-5. Also in the third inning, Courtney Condon relieved Sapp, who had started the game on the mound, and put an end to the Georgia Military rally.
Madison Wickine led off the fourth with a single and then stole second, before being driven home by Madison Claytor to give Pisgah the lead back at 6-5. The Lady Dogs had a chance to go ahead in the bottom of the fifth, when they loaded the bases with two out, but a fly ball to center fielder Wickline ended the inning.
With one out in the sixth Wickline put down a bunt hit that was fielded and thrown into right field. The speedy sophomore made it all the way around to score for a 7-5 Pisgah lead.
Then the floodgates opened for the Lady Patriots in the top of the seventh inning. Walters led off with a home run, which was followed by consecutive hits from Condon, Camille Tracy, Avery White, Alaina Grant and Nicole Peters. After Wickline struck out, Pisgah pounded out six consecutive hits including a three-run home run by Condon and triples by Tracy and White.
“The team was strangely quiet during the pregame meal on Friday,” Brooks said of her team before the deciding game. “Even walking to the field they were quiet, which is unusual for them. It finally struck me that they were a focused quiet.”
In the first game of the series, Pisgah jumped out to an early lead on a RBI single by Walters. The Lady Dogs responded with three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. A Walters home run in the third inning and a sac-fly by Claytor in the fourth inning tied the score.
The Patriots took the lead in the fifth inning as a Wickline infield single scored Camille Tracy. Two Pisgah errors in the sixth inning allowed three more Georgia Military runs to score, giving them a 6-4 lead. The Lady Patriots come from behind streak ended as they were not able to score again.
After a slow start in game two the Lady Patriots responded just fine to the challenge. Georgia Military jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, but Pisgah answered in the second scoring two runs on a Wickline single and two more on a Jenn Sapp double. A Tracy three-run home run put the Patriots up 7-2.
The Lady Dogs rallied to score three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to tie the score at 8-8. In the top of the seventh, Claytor drove in two runs with a two out, bases loaded double to put Pisgah up for good 10-8. On the mound, Condon shut down Georgia Military in the bottom of the inning to even the series.
Pisgah will face Brookstone in the first game of the Elite Eight on Thursday, October 27th at noon. Brookstone is 26-10 and the No. 1 seed from Region 4. They defeated Johnson County in the first round and Telfair County in the second round.
“I have heard that they are a very solid fundamental team,” Brooks said of the Patriots opening opponent.
The final eight teams will meet in Columbus for a double elimination tournament, which will run from Thursday to Saturday.

Patriots Fall to King’s Ridge in Overtime
The Mount Pisgah Christian School football team lost to King’s Ridge in heartbreaking fashion Friday night 20-14 in overtime. After spotting Kings Ridge a 14-0 lead, the Patriots (4-4, 2-3 5N-A) battled back to tie the score and twice in the closing minutes were inside the Tigers 20 yard line, but were unable to score either time.
Kings Ridge scored twice in the first quarter on long pass plays of 40 and 26 yards. Pisgah got on the board in the second quarter on a 44 yard run by Kyle Sloter. Later, Kyle Jackson tied the score in the third quarter on a three yard run.
Tied at 14 Pisgah took over with 4:15 left on their own 40 yard line. Two passes from Sloter to Jackson, plus a personal foul penalty on King’s Ridge put the ball inside the Tiger 20 yard line. Pisgah made it as far as the seven before they were stopped on third down. Looking to take the lead Austin Harper missed a 23 yard field goal when it hit the left upright.
King’s Ridge took over with 2 minutes remaining, but Patrick Messinger’s interception gave Pisgah the ball back on the Tigers 21 yard line. After an eight yard run by Sloter on first down, King’s Ridge’s Jason McCoy picked off a Sloter pass intended for Jackson.
The Tigers ran out the clock to send the game into overtime. Pisgah had the ball first to start the overtime. After being stopped on third down, the Patriots opted to pass on another field goal attempt and went for it on fourth down. But Jackson was stopped short of the first down marker. King’s Ridge scored two plays later to win the game.
Sloter finished the night 8-of-19 for 128 yards and added 93 yards rushing on 15 carries. Jackson rushed for 50 yards and added another 63 receiving.
Defensively, Jacob Delk led the team with six tackles. The Patriots had four sacks – one each by John O’Connor, Delk and Shingirai Chigwere. Alex Dixon and Foster Gailey also combined on a sack. Jeremy Morris had a fourth quarter interception to stop a King’s Ridge drive into Pisgah territory.
Next up for the Patriots is a home game against Wesleyan. All Pisgah home games are played on the Patriot Athletic Campus, located at 9825 Brumbelow Road in Johns Creek.

Condon Overcomes Illness to Help Lead Pisgah Softball
In the first round of the state playoffs last week, Mount Pisgah Christian School sophomore softball player Courtney Condon hit a second inning home run and pitched seven innings in a 5-4 Patriot victory over North Cobb Christian. In the Region championship game Condon got the winning hit in the 9th inning of an 11-10 win over Wesleyan. She also picked up the win on the mound after relieving starter Jenn Sapp in the 5th inning.
Condon has been a force this year for the Lady Patriots both on the mound and at the plate, and this week will help lead the Lady Patriots in the second round of the GHSA playoffs. But just nine months ago there were serious doubts as to whether or not Condon would ever be able to walk again, much less play softball.
In December of 2010, just two months after she was named All-Region 5-A as a freshman, Condon was diagnosed with blood clots in both legs. She spent 19 days at Eggleston Children’s Hospital and endured three surgeries. At the end of the 19 days the clots were still present, but Condon was told to go home and not use her legs – relegating her to a wheelchair. The doctors were also concerned about gangrene and discussed amputation.
An Emory doctor, Lewis Martin, suggested the family look at the possibility of taking Courtney to see Dr. Patricia Thorpe in Arizona who specialized in these types of cases.
“It was an awful hard decision to take her to Arizona and subject her to more surgery and more treatment,” said Felicia Condon, Courtney’s mother. “There is not much history of people Courtney’s age with blood clots like she had. It was a real aggressive move to take her out there.”
“I wanted to go. I’d rather be safe than sorry,” Courtney said. “Plus I thought it would be cool to go to Arizona.”
Ultimately, Courtney did travel to Arizona and after 15 days in a hospital and three more surgeries, the blood clots were gone. But after so much time off her legs Condon still had an uphill battle to return to the diamond.
“I had to relearn how to walk,” she said. Courtney endured hours of physical therapy, going from a wheelchair, to crutches and finally back to walking unassisted.
“It was a really emotional experience for me. I kept asking why this happened to me,” Courtney said.
In addition to relearning how to walk, Condon learned a lot about herself.
“I learned that I took it [softball] all for granted. Softball means so much more to me now,” she said.
“You can tell that her battle through all of her health issues has helped her mature in a lot of ways. She has definitely learned how precious life and the talents that we are blessed with are. I remember her telling me not too long after she returned home that she would never take softball for granted if she could just get back out on the field,” said Pisgah head coach Haley Brooks. “I can see that appreciation every day at practice. There is a drive that was not quite there last year. One thing I have also noticed is the difference in her faith. She is definitely playing with a passion for something bigger than softball.”
“I didn’t always practice very hard,” Condon admitted. “But I want to play in college now.”
“I am amazed how she has been able to learn and bounce back from all the odds that were set against her. She is a determined young lady that has truly risen and conquered many challenges that would have put a lot of other athletes out of their game. She is swinging the bat better than I have ever seen her, and that is a direct effect from the focused effort at practice to make herself better. Along the same lines, she is constantly striving to extend her game on the mound, perfecting pitches and adding other things to her arsenal,” Brooks said.
But it wasn’t just softball that Courtney now realizes she took for granted.
“I took school for granted. It sounds weird, but I just wanted to come back to school and be back in class with my friends,” she said. “I also took my family for granted. I am now much closer to my brother.”
Courtney’s brother Garrett is a senior at Pisgah. He plays on the varsity basketball and baseball teams.
“This experience matured her a lot. It put her more in touch with God. She used her spirituality a lot to get through,” Felicia said.
But it wasn’t just Courtney who grew from this experience – her family did as well. Felicia said the Pisgah community was amazingly supportive during this time. When Felicia and her husband Gary took Courtney to Arizona they had to leave Garrett at home. Felicia said they were comforted in this decision knowing that he would have so many people to watch out for him.
Felicia also said that Courtney’s pediatrician Dr. Susan Traxler and her husband Dr. Malcom Traxler have been a constant source of assistance for the family. Felicia said she talks to one of the doctors almost daily.
This season Condon is 11-2 on the mound with a 2.76 ERA. Opponents are hitting .196 against her. Offensively, the middle infielder is hitting .424 with 3 home runs, 26 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
With all of her medical issues in the past Courtney and her teammates can now focus on the state playoffs. The Lady Patriots (21-3) will host Georgia Military (21-10) in the second round of the GHSA Class A playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The best of three series will begin at 2 p.m. at Pisgah’s Patriot Athletic Campus, which is located at 9825 Brumbelow Road in Johns Creek.

Pisgah Rallies to Win Region Championship
After coming from behind to win their first two games in the Region 5-A tournament, the No. 2 ranked Mount Pisgah Christian School softball team rallied again to defeat Wesleyan 11-10 in 9 innings on Tuesday to win the tournament.
After being down early in the first two games, the Lady Patriots (19-3) actually jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first inning. Madison Claytor and Courtney Condon drove in runs to get Pisgah on the board.
After adding another run in the second inning, Wesleyan stormed back to get three runs in the third and five runs in the fifth. Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh Nicole Peters led off with a single, which was followed by a two-run home run by Jenn Sapp. After a double play, the Patriots were down to their last out when Condon hit another home run to tie the score.
Using the International Tie-Breaker for extra innings, Wesleyan was able to push across one run in the 8th inning on a wild pitch and a single. In the Pisgah half of the 8th inning Avery White was the runner on second and she advanced to third on a ground out. A pop-up left White on third, with two outs, but Peters chopped a single to the right side to score the run.
Condon, who came in to pitch in the fifth inning, shut Wesleyan out in the top of the 9th. In the bottom of the inning a walk to Claytor and an error loaded the bases with no one out. Once again Condon delivered at the plate hitting a single up the middle to win the game.
“This win was truly a team win. We used everybody on the roster to pull this out. Winning the Region tournament is huge for the school and our softball program,” head coach Haley Brooks said after the game. “Our goal was to stay undefeated in the Region and we accomplished that by staying in the winners bracket and not allowing Wesleyan to force that ‘If’ game. “
On the night Condon was 3-for-5 at the plate with 3 RBIs. She also earned the win on the mound pitching five innings and only allowing three hits and one run, while striking out five.
Claytor was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Brooks also pointed to the catchers’ strong defense as a huge factor in the win. No Wesleyan runners attempted to steal and Claytor did not allow a passed ball.
In addition Peters finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Sapp also scored three runs.
“We had three come from behind wins, which is obviously not how you plan on winning, however I believe that God has had his hand in every game of this season preparing us for something big. These girls - they do not quit. I have never coached a team that has been so calm and collected when behind even late in the game,” Brooks said on her team’s ability to come from behind. “As a coach, I know at any point in the game, no matter who the ball is hit to, or who is in the box we are never out of the game.”
Brooks continued, “We are truly a unit that is well aware of the fact that we have not accomplished anything this season by ourselves. In all three games [in the Region tournament] a team prayer mid game has sparked the comeback. That is a testament to the faith and maturity of this team. I could not be more proud or more excited about the rest of the post season. I challenged our girls to play so that people can see their light (their faith) that I am witness to everyday and I am pretty sure that light was and is burning strong for all to see! “
Pisgah will host either North Cobb Christian or Eagles Landing in the first round of the state playoffs.

Turnovers Costly as Pisgah Falls to Holy Innocents
Needing to play a nearly flawless game to knock off the No. 9 ranked Holy Innocents Golden Bears, the Mount Pisgah Christian School football team stumbled and lost 48-10.
The game got off to a bad start for the Patriots (3-2, 1-1 5N-A) as Holy Innocents Andy Nichols returned the opening kick-off 98-yards for a touchdown. The Patriots fumbled on their first possession leading to another Golden Bear (5-1, 3-0) score.
Quickly down 14-0 Pisgah showed some determination putting together an 11 play, 56 yard drive that resulted in a 21 yard field goal by Austin Harper. Holy Innocents scored again in the second quarter, but the Patriots answered, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by Kyle Sloter.
Despite trailing 21-10 Pisgah had some momentum heading into the locker room at halftime, but that quickly faded as the Patriots fumbled the first snap of the second half and the Bears took advantage scoring a touchdown on the next play.
On the night, Sloter finished 10-of-21 for 105 yards passing. Kyle Jackson led the rushing attack with 53 yards on 14 carries.
The Patriots will be home this week for their Homecoming game against Region rival Fellowship. Game time is 7:30 at the Patriot Athletic Campus, located at 9825 Brumbelow Road in Johns Creek.

Cross Country Squads Earn Top Ten Rankings
The Mount Pisgah Christian School boy’s and girl’s cross country teams earned top ten rankings in the latest Cross Country Coaches Association polls. The girls are ranked No. 9, while the boys are ranked No. 10.
“Both our boys and girls teams have been more committed than ever this season, and their successes to date proves that hard work in this sport really does pay off,” said head coach Susan Reilly. “Our goal right now is to continue to improve, stay healthy, and be prepared to run our very best at the region championship meet in October.”
The bad news for the Patriots is that reaching the state meet as a team will be challenging as four other region opponents are also ranked in the top ten in both polls. On the boy’s side Wesleyan (No. 1), Galloway (No. 2), Providence (No. 5) and Pace (No. 7) are also ranked. Girl’s teams found in the poll include Providence (No. 2), Wesleyan (No. 5), Galloway (No. 7) and Pace (No. 8).
“Our athletes have shown a lot of grit so far, and part of that is due to being in such a strong running region. Competition has made us better, and we are extremely proud of all of our athletes,” Reilly said.
Last time out for the Patriots at the Warpath Invitational in Canton, Sam Reilly set a new school record with a time of 16:26. He placed 12th out of 215 runners and his time sub 16:30 time qualified him nationally for 2nd Team Elite status.
The boys’ team finished 21st out of 31 teams and the girl’s finished 24th out of 29 teams. Katie Strawinski led the girls with a time of 20:45, good for 53rd out of 202 runners.
The average times of the top seven finishers at the event were the lowest in the seven year history of the program. The boy’s averaged 18:08 and the girl’s 22:58.
This season 15 Patriot runners have set personal records.

The Lady Patriots finished the regular season 16-3 overall and 7-0 in Region 5-A play. This is the second consecutive year that Pisgah has gone undefeated in Region regular season play.
“I feel very confident about our team heading into playoffs. I feel as if the girls are focused and have a clear mission that they are looking to accomplish,” said head coach Haley Brooks. “Every single player has extended their level of play this year in some way, which makes us a better team as a whole…and the chemistry that we have on the field is a coach’s dream!”
Pisgah opens postseason play on Friday at Pace Academy in the Region tournament. They will face the winner of the Pace/Providence game.

Junior catcher Madison Claytor isn’t too far behind with her .456 batting average and 17 RBIs. Brooks added that Claytor’s influence behind the plate has been a big factor in the team’s success.
On the mound sophomore pitchers Courtney Condon and Jenn Sapp have both been dominating. Sapp is 8-1 with a 1.73 ERA. She has 41 strikeouts in 57 innings on the mound and opponents are hitting .155 off of her. Condon is 7-2 with a 2.17 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 45 innings. Opposing batters are only faring slightly better against Condon as she has a .199 opponents’ batting average.
“Our defensive is a collective effort, and the girls have proven to be very versatile as we have shifted the looks of our defense throughout the year without much change in production. That is always encouraging to have a team that will do whatever it takes,” Brooks added.

Pisgah Adds Wrestling as Varsity Sport – Tabs Merry to Lead Program
Mount Pisgah Christian School will add a wrestling program for the 2011-2012 school year. This will be the 19th varsity sport offered by the school. Pisgah has also named Josh Merry as the first coach for the program.
“There is a lot to consider when determining which athletic program we are ready to add to the school. Wrestling fits the criteria for numerous reasons,” said General Manager for Athletics Blake Davenport. “First, it is perhaps the purest form of athletic competition in the area of organized sports. Second, there are no pieces of equipment to master, ball involved or pads for protection. Third, there’s no time to rethink strategy, regroup, or even to take a time-out midway through the action. There’s only you, and your opponent. Preparation and the will to succeed will determine the winner. Finally, it competes in the winter season when basketball is the only other sport that our boys have to choose from.”
“We are very excited to have someone with the caliber and energy level to lead this new program,” Davenport said of Merry. “His energy and intense competitiveness can be seen in how he spent part of his family vacation competing at the Lake Placid (NY) Ironman where he cut his previous best time to finish below the 10 hour mark which qualifies him for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.”
In addition to a varsity squad, the Patriots will also offer Middle School wrestling, as well as community program through Patriot Community Sports.
“My number one objective in developing a new wrestling program at Mount Pisgah is to introduce this great sport to the school and the community,” Merry said. “I want to share how this great sport has helped shape numerous successful men and women into who they are today (including me) because the discipline and dedication that is required in the sport of wrestling.”
Merry continued, “Since Mount Pisgah has the ability to attract and retain students from elementary to high school it is important to develop a youth program that introduces this sport and allows youth to have some success and fun while participating. This will allow the student-athletes to build into a program that will require the same discipline and dedication from day one with all ages. The key to building a successful program is having both the school and community buy-into the sport of wrestling and embrace it.”
Merry wrestled collegiately at Anderson College, where he was a two-time NCAA Division II Academic All-American. He was also the team captain for two years.
Prior to Pisgah, Merry was a wrestling coach, as well as the Chair of the Science Department at Riverside Military Academy.
He holds Masters Degrees in Sports Medicine, as well as Business Administration. He is currently pursuing an Ed. D in Educational Leadership.
Merry will be teaching physics, chemistry and environmental science in the Upper School.

Lady Patriots Capture State Championship
The Mount Pisgah Christian School girl’s tennis team captured the GHSA Class A state championship on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Pace Academy. The Patriots, who entered the state tournament ranked No. 1, finished the season 19-0. This was the first state championship for the school in any sport since moving to GHSA five years ago.
"What a terrific feeling it was when Samantha Russell won the point that actually clinched the championship. It had looked like it was going to happen since early in the match but there was a surge of excitement from our team and all our supporters when it finally happened. There was a combination of tears and shrieks of joy -- sometimes both at the same time," said head coach Ken Bomar.
The real excitement came in the semifinal match against No. 2 Brookstone, which Pisgah won 3-2. The Lady Patriots found themselves in an early hole, after losing both doubles matches.
"Brookstone was a mature, experienced team. They were all quite physically imposing -- several were 5-8 to 5-11 tall and did not look like kids,” said Bomar. “They were strong at every position and were obviously the toughest test we had all season.”
Taylor Carlson got the Patriots on the board winning her match at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0. Samantha Russell tied the score with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. Which left things up to freshman Aryn Greene in the No. 1 singles position. Greene lost the first set 6-7 (9-7) to senior, and Notre Dame signee, Katherine White.
“When I found out I was the last match I was excited. I thought it would be cool to all come down on me. I felt like I could handle the pressure,” Greene said. “I tried to relax and give myself the best opportunity to win.”
"Aryn's match was one of the best high school matches I have ever had the pleasure of watching,” said Bomar of the two and a half hour match. “By the time we realized it was all coming downs to Aryn’s match it was starting to get very warm and both girls were expending a lot of energy on the court. It started to be pretty clear that Katherine was getting tired and showed signs of cramping. She took a medical timeout and they worked on her leg but it was obvious that she was having trouble moving. When the match ended Katherine was spent and Aryn could have gone another set. It was interesting that spectators from other schools and matches around the complex had come to this court and were standing four to five deep just to watch what was going on."
In the end Greene won 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 and sent Pisgah to the finals against region rival Pace. The Patriots had defeated Pace twice earlier in the season, and Saturday’s outcome was no different.
“Our girls just went out and took care of business and the championship was ours. Our three singles girls only lost one game and we were off the court in less than an hour," said Bomar.
Against Pace Greene won 6-0, 6-0; Russell won 6-1, 6-0; and Carlson won 6-0, 6-0.
"Our girls had talked about winning the state championship since the beginning of the season but I don't think anyone knew what that really meant. I kept telling them not to worry about winning the state and if they just won the next match the rest of the season would take care of itself,” said Bomar. “As we moved into the second half of the season and had convincingly beaten the teams usually considered to be very strong, it looked like we had something pretty special going on. I've got to give our girls credit for staying focused. We closed each practice with prayer and I have to believe this helped us. If they felt any pressure from being undefeated, they didn't show it."
