The Upper School program prides itself on “providing big school opportunities in a small school setting.” By designing the curriculum to offer maximum flexibility in course options, Upper School students can pursue their areas of passion in an academically rigorous environment. The Academic Handbook is featured below with a complete listing of curriculum and information about Pisgah's unique mini-mesters and Advisory program.

Pisgah offers Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in all core classes and electives that meet the diverse interests of our student body. The results are impressive with Pisgah AP students netting nearly an 80% passing rate on the nationally administered AP exams, far exceeding their peer group.

Pisgah is pleased to provide an outstanding experience for high school students in Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Roswell, and throughout North Fulton county. Twice a year, exciting mini-mesters provide students a unique opportunity for exploration. For two weeks, the day is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, allowing students to spend three hours per day learning more about their selected subject. More than 50 topics are offered including: Forensic Science, Baroque Painting, Introduction to Media Production, Palates of the World, Sports Ethics, Creative Writing, "Freak"onomics, Robotics, and more. Complete listings may be found in the Academic Handbook at left.

Pisgah Spotlight: Discovery

Ask a group of teenagers: “How would you like to spend part of your summer vacation living in a tent with no TV, going days without a shower, surrounded by mounds of bird poo?” You can imagine the reaction. But five students from Pisgah jumped at the chance to do just that on an incredible Earthwatch expedition to Alaska. Read more.

Pisgah Spotlight: Mount Pisgah Korea
Pisgah President Scott Barron recently led a team of teachers and alumni in Seoul, South Korea as they provided training to teachers and administrators at Mount Pisgah Korea. Mount Pisgah Korea provides an engaging curriculum for its young students -- a curriculum that was designed by Pisgah's Lower School teachers and Head of Primary School Nancy Shaw.

Team at the King's Palace

Pisgah Preschool Director Susan Brown taught the Readers Theater class under a tarp on the back porch one day. She figured out a little trick - if you take an umbrella and push up on the sagging spots, the water will pour off on the side rather than randomly on your head. She's a trooper and dedicated educator!

Hank Shaw, Class of 2011, is a naturally gifted teacher. He watches the body language and listens to his students, adapting his instructional strategies accordingly. He makes good decisions, responding patiently to change.

As you would expect, Pisgah Pathfinder's Pat Izer has been hands on and full speed ahead. These kids are loving the cooking classes!

Week on the Campaign Trail

Students in Ms. Stenga's government classes were assigned to roles and sides in a campaign to elect Democratic and Republican Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates through a mock campaign week.  Each group had candidates and a campaign manager who helped them prepare speaking points and hold photo ops with potential constituents in nine fictitious districts posted around the room.  Media directors helped create a campaign slogan, design posters supporting their candidates, and direct and produce thirty-second commercials that they presented in class.

Each mock day lasted for 10 minutes - and no more than three days happened during a class period.  The students used the other time to prepare for the coming events.  Then, at the conclusion of the week the candidates gave speeches to the class and the class voted! Photo at right is of kids "visiting" a district during a photo op with their non-candidate peers.

Future Business Leaders

Pisgah's Future Business Leaders of America (F.B.L.A.). will be hearing from successful business leaders and entrepreneurs this year. Keith McSwain, Pisgah parent and successful Atlanta businessman, was this week's featured speaker. McSwain, a third generation builder, is the visionary behind KM Homes.

F.B.L.A is joining forces with Student Government to help parents in the Atlanta area get Christmas gifts to their children, through Pride for Parents. The kick-off event for Upper School only will be a fundraiser on November 30th: TACKY CHRISTMAS WEAR DAY! Wristbands for this event will be sold at the Upper School the morning of Nov. 30th for a cost of $5.  All proceeds will go directly to Pride for Parents!
